UNISON Lifelong Learning

Lifelong Learning In recent years, UNISON has been working on membership development, which has been extended by securing free workplace learning opportunities, including time off for training. This learning partnership programme, which requires the agreement of employers, is open to members and potential members and cover Skills for Life through access to higher education.

A new type of union activist, the Union Learning Representative (ULR), has been instrumental in raising interest in training and development, especially among the lowest skilled workers and those with literacy and numeracy needs.

What is a Learning Rep?

  • Gives advice to people at work how education can help them
  • Provides information about courses
  • Supports people who are nervous about going back to Learning
  • Finds out what Learning needs there are in the workplace
  • Talks to the employer about training needs
  • Is entitled to paid time off to perform their duties, just like any other rep
